Alfresco Share is a webapp that connects via HTTP-Requests to an anlfresco repository. The default installation assumes, that the alfreso repository is accessible at localhost:8080.

Installing Share in an environment, where the remote server (the alfresco-webapp) ist not accessible under localhost:8080, will lead to this error:

The remote server may be unavailable or your authentication details have not been recognized

I was able to resolve that issue with the help of this posting:

After replacing localhost:8080 with the correct url of my server, I was able to login into Share.

PS:
In my installation, Alfresco 3.2 community, plain tomcat with the two webapps alfresco and share, there was no

$ALF_HOME/tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco/extension/custom-repository.properties

, so I just ignored it.
